BALBOA SUNDAYS! This is an intermediate level Balboa workshop series. Continue to build your Balboa skills by adding combos and variations. Each hour and a half workshop will focus on a different aspect of this amazing dance, with an extra half hour available for free practice in the studio.
The Balboa, also known as “Bal“, is a swing dance style that originated in Southern California and was very popular during the 1930s and 1940s. It has a worldwide following among today’s lindy hoppers who enjoy the ability to dance without breaking a sweat or worrying about a crowded dance floor. It is the perfect dance for gypsy jazz and fast music, although it is now becoming equally popular to use it for slower tempos.
The earliest form of the dance (often called “Pure Balboa”) evolved in the crowded dance halls of southern California where space was limited. These dance halls prohibited the wild kicks of the Charleston and swing-outs of Lindy Hop. Pure Balboa is characterized by a close embrace and fast footwork. While most dancers differentiate between pure Balboa and Bal-Swing, both are considered to be a part of the dance. Bal-Swing evolved from Balboa when original Balboa dancers experimented with breakaway variations involving a variety of spins and turns.
Instructors Linda and Chester studied Balboa extensively with many of the top Balboa dancers and instructors around the world such as Sylvia Sykes, Marcus & Barble, Rob & Diane, Joel Plys, Mickey & Kelly as well as danced at its original venue on Balboa island where Linda had the opportunity to dance with a few of the well-known originators and innovators of the dance, including Roy Damaron.
